Education duty-bearers and institutions
ensure equal access to quality, free publicly financed education and are held accountable for investing in women, girls and those who suffer discrimination based on gender or sex.
To achieve equal educational opportunities, Oxfam and civil society partners advocate for the abolishment of hidden costs in the education system and transparency and fairness in budget allocations and hiring processes. Oxfam also calls for eliminating for-profit, poor-quality low-fee schools that are increasingly becoming the only option for the most marginalized communities, which weak public systems do not reach.
Oxfam advocates for an improved public education infrastructure with sanitary and inclusive conditions for girls and women, so that they feel the school is a safe and secure place.
Empowering women educators through their own organizations and unions is important in allowing them to be represented and influence decisions related to policies and legislation that are directly or indirectly gender discriminatory. In this way, equal access to economic and social opportunities are promoted.
